How we research and rank
Every product is evaluated against the specific demands of deep-sky imaging, using published specifications, manufacturer transmission and error data, and long-run reports from imagers: guiding accuracy in arcseconds, payload utilization at the imaging-safe 50 to 60 percent threshold, filter bandwidths read off the spec sheet, and dew controller behavior across a full night.
Who writes these picks
DeepField is written and maintained by its editorial team. We publish under the DeepField name rather than a personal byline, because our rankings come from documented research rather than one person's hands-on experience. Where a specification, measurement, or figure appears in a guide, it comes from the manufacturer or a cited source, not from our own bench.
What we score on
Every pick is judged on the same criteria. We weight them by what actually matters for the way you will use the gear, then write up the tradeoffs honestly.
Tracking accuracy
Published peak-to-peak periodic error in arcseconds, compared guided against unguided and cross-checked with owner-reported guiding logs.
Payload practicality
Rated payload assessed against the 50 to 60 percent imaging-safe threshold astrophotographers work to, with the full accessory train counted.
Software integration
PHD2, N.I.N.A., ASIAIR, and Pegasus Unity Platform support checked against current firmware release notes and vendor compatibility lists.
Filter optical quality
Stated passband bandwidth read from the manufacturer transmission curve, with reported star halo behavior at f/4 and f/6 drawn from imager write-ups.
Build durability
Connector and housing reliability judged from stated materials and ingress ratings alongside long-run owner reports in cold and damp conditions.
Value
Performance relative to price; premium over budget justified by documented imaging improvement.
How our picks work
Each category roundup is ranked by our editorial score. The highest-scored option carries the Top Pick badge. Separately, the option that delivers the most for the money carries the Best Value badge. They are often different products on purpose: the best-scored is not always the smartest buy for most people, and we tell you which is which.
What we never do
- We take no payment, free product, or sponsorship in exchange for coverage or a ranking. There are no paid placements.
- We do not claim to have tested a product we have not tested, and we do not publish reviews under the name of a person who does not exist.
- We say what is wrong with a product, not just what is right. Every pick lists real tradeoffs.
- We match recommendations to your situation (fitment, skill level, budget, and use case) instead of pushing one product on everyone.
- Prices and specifications change. Always confirm the current price and fitment on the retailer's page before buying.
How we make money
DeepField is funded by affiliate commissions. When you buy through a link on our site, the retailer may pay us a small commission at no additional cost to you. That funding never influences our scores or our picks. Full details are on our affiliate disclosure.
